One of the huge pleasures of Quentin Tarantino movies is the wonderfully inventive casting that he employs. In PULP FICTION, he revived the career of John Travolta, made Samuel Jackson a star, pushed Bruce Willis into another echelon and even helped fetch Ving Rhames off to a top-notch inaugurate. In JACKIE BROWN, he burnished Pam Grier & Robert Forster’s careers. In End BILL, he reinvented Uma Thurman and reinvigorated David Carradine. Even in DEATH PROOF, he introduced the world to the wonderful stuntwoman Zoe Bell and gave Kurt Russell the kind of share he’s missed out on for too long.

And now, wonderfully, in INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, he’s introduced the American viewer to some stellar European actors, namely Melanie Laurent and particularly Christoph Waltz, now an easy accepted for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

Tarantino also frequently tries the patience of his viewers with his rococo dialogue and insistence on constantly reminding us that we’re watching a movie. In PULP FICTION, all his “habits” were new and modern to most viewers (because, really, how many of us had seen RESERVOIR DOGS before we saw FICTION? ), but over time, we learned that Tarantino was often unbiased a limited too contented with his contain screenwriting and often too jubilant with his have directing. In a completely off-the-wall fragment like the priceless Waste BILL films, everything worked to manufacture a crazy-quilt whole. In INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, he’s too clever for his acquire genuine at times.

BASTERDS tells the completely fraudulent epic of how World War II might have ended had a group of bloodthirsty, highly trained American Jews been allowed to infiltrate Nazi occupied France with no mission other than to purchase Nazi scalps. Oh, and how that mission needed to collide with one fateful night when all the top leadership of Germany attended the gala opening of a unusual propaganda film held at a movie theatre owned by a heavenly French girl who was actually a Jew who had escaped a massacre that had taken her entire family and now she’s zigzag on revenge at any cost. And of how her goal coincides with that of an undercover British agent who objective happens to be a German film scholar and a German double agent who happens to be a movie star.

I know that sounds a puny confusing. To Tarantino’s credit, the region as laid out in this 150 tiny film is actually easy to follow. In fact, he’s achieve everything into easy-to-digest chapters. It does ask us to own that every principal member of the German government & military would all assemble in a fairly public station at one time…but if you can gather past that hurdle, there is noteworthy vicarious pleasure to be had in watching WWII reinvented by Tarantino.

By far, the best portion of the film is Chapter 1. It features Waltz as SS officer Col. Hans Landa in what is easily the most chilling portrayal of a Nazi since Ralph Fiennes donned the uniform in SCHINDLER’S LIST. Fiennes role (and that entire luminous movie) were for altogether different purposes. Landa comes off more like a Nazi Hannibal Lecter (without the weird dining preferences) …he’s a bit of a lone wolf in his have party. He’s feared by all, because he has a astonishing BS detector that helps him root out deception at every turn. In the opening scene, which plays out like a gorgeous one-act play, Landa comes to a humble French farmhouse and speaks with the owner. We know the owner is hiding Jews beneath his floorboard, and we’re fair definite Landa knows it too. Fair how he gets that information, through one of the most tense interrogation scenes you’ll ever scrutinize, is a joy to peep. You literally bag yourself not breathing. I leaned forward in my seat. And yet there is never a raised remark, nor a threatening gesture. The screws are applied through intensity of manner. Waltz instantly makes his character a classic. Tarantino the writer has crafted intelligent dialogue, and Tarantino the director films it all with rare taste and simplicity, and Waltz knocks it out of the park.

The rest of the film is more uneven. While Brad Pitt is a goofy delight as Aldo Raine, leader of the Basterds…it’s a performance that is more campy than believable. His Basterds, including folks like director Eli Roth and B.J. Novak from TV’s “The Office” are fairly interchangeable. And strangely, we scrutinize forward to them conducting Raze BILL PT. ONE type mayhem, yet they actually expend relatively tiny screentime showing them in action. There is one short, effective scene of their believe heed of interrogation…but mostly we have to remove the word of other characters (like Hitler himself) that these guys are wreaking havoc on the Nazis.

And during one jarring moment, we are introduced to one of the basterds with a blast of `70s era Blaxploitation music and a `70s era title card. Why? Yes, it was droll…but it took everyone totally out of the spell the movie was weaving. Unbiased as having Michael Myers, in thick but unconvincing makeup, play a British officer hatching a design to blow up a movie theater, was very distracting. Myers accent is impeccable, and he plays the fragment straight…but he’s mild unmistakably Myers and many audience members snickered when they recognized him. Very distracting.

It’s as though Tarantino doesn’t quite possess that he can compose a straightforward film and have it be riveting. Too poor…because when he gets out of his beget draw (as he mostly does in the climactic sequences of the film), INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS is a cinematic treat. The delicate settings and comely costumes even gave Tarantino a chance to expose off and have it fit the tone of the film…but he serene insists on going off the rails. “Hey, this is a Tarantino movie!” he seems to want to bellow at us. And this causes him to bag in the device of the elegant Melanie Laurant, who plays the vengeful theater owner. I’ve never seen her before, and she is an entrancing presence, whether in casual slacks or a beautiful formal red dress. She dominates the final portions of the film.

I had a ample time at this film, and I recommend it fairly highly. But with 10 minutes less of the sometimes too clever dialogue and 5 minutes less of Tarantino’s showboating, and we might have had a proper classic of suspense. Ogle it, though, because the two performances I mentioned are worth the brand of admission…heck, the opening scene is worth it.

Writer/director Quentin Tarantino’s WWII adventure is curious, but overrated. The running time of nearly three hours flew by, and I was riveted by the stories of the woman and the Nazi; however, the Basterds themselves did not absorb my interest for a moment. Brad Pitt, as their leader, really stands out for his unpleasant performance when contrasted with the many incredible but lesser known actors in this film, such as Diane Kruger playing a German movie star who is also a double agent. Tarantino’s gimmicks are not as numerous as they are in some of his other projects, but they are jarring when they occur. Many gawk them as exuberant nods to B-movie history, but they strike me as indulgences that rarely aid the memoir. Nevertheless, the rest of the film is so fine that I have no anxiety recommending it.

And the draw he ends WWII is a lot more satisfying than the plan it really ended.

This has always been my accepted film in my approved film series. And I agree with the other reviews here that the Brentwood DVD boasts a nice crisp print, courtesy of the UCLA Film Archives. However, there is one inexplicable mistake in the video transfer. Movies such as this that predate widescreen format generally fit neatly into a standard TV record frame with only minimal clipping on all sides. But “letterboxing” is not unbiased for wide-screen movies. In the better DVD and video versions of pre-widescreen movies the opening credits are often letterboxed on all four sides so that the viewer can spy the entire frame without the names being clipped off at the beginning or ruin (hence the word “letterbox”) .

Such is the case with this version of Road to Rio. There is a 4-sided letterbox around the opening credits, but the frame of the film is not adjusted to fit inside the letterbox! So instead of allowing us to witness the entire frame, the letterboxing here actually masks a ample part of the characterize. (This is really gloomy because the opening credits are quite clever, with the names of the stars literally dancing along a cartoonish painting of the Copacabanna beach to the tune of “Brazil.”) As you notice the credits you will search for the clumsy pan-and-scan as the frame is consciously maneuvered within the letterbox to follow the shifting station of names and credits. This of course, defeats the whole purpose of letterboxing, and begs the seek information from, “What were these people thinking? ” They obviously knew the characterize did not fit the letterbox!

The reason this is so annoying is that Director Norman Z. McLeod (perhaps the most accomplished comedy director of the entire “Road” series) was a cartoonist and drew a series of droll tiny stick-figure caricatures of the cast and crew that appear in the lower factual hand corner of Road to Rio’s opening credits. This was a trademark of McLeod’s; he did this in some of his earlier comedies as well. Unfortunately the ham-fisted letterboxing almost completely obscures these drawings. I know this sounds like a minor complaint, but Rio’s opening titles are the best in the series and really site the tone for the whole movie. Someone really had to go out of their arrangement to mess up an otherwise proper presentation of this film. An earlier VHS version of Road to Rio released by Columbia Home Video managed to letterbox the opening credits properly.

It’s a shame that Road to Rio and Road to Bali are not owned by Universal (which owns all of Paramount’s pre-1948 releases including the first four “Road” films) . Universal’s “Road” DVDs are technically exquisite. If Rio and Bali could have been piece of Universal’s DVD position, fans would’ve been very fortunate. Alas Rio and Bali are owned by Bob Hope Enterprises. As is often the case with older films whose copyrights are not held by major studios with the resources to do them justice, these two sizable films (as well as several other Hope classics owned by Hope Enterprises) have had a very inconsistent existence on home video.

May 2003 marks not only the 100th birthday of the gargantuan Mr. Hope, but Bing Crosby would also have been 100 years archaic this month! (Bing was 27 days older than Bob) . Even with the letterboxing glitch, this DVD of Road to Rio is a astonishing scheme to celebrate the centennial of one of Hollywood’s greatest comedy teams. Jubilant Birthday, Bob!

This is a review of the STERLING/PEARSON DVD “Bob Hope Film Collection” edition (with the green camouflage!) I hope that helps station this apart from the other editions and reviews…

The film is a ample example of the Road movies – it’s no Utopia or Morocco, but it’s composed very provocative. Lamour is sparkling whilst Hope and Crosby wise-crack and soft-shoe with the best of ‘em. All in all a four star movie.

However, this DVD has a rather pathetic amount of extras (ie. none), a fair-to-middling print and a very improper audio track. My suggestion is to earn another DVD edition. At the kill of the day – we all want to upgrade from VHS to DVD, so why determine for an edition that is estentially lower quality?
